The Lead Marine Mechanic is located at Cape May, NJ and is a highly skilled mechanic capable of performing hands-on repairs to all machinery or mechanical equipment on board Authority vessels.  Reports to the Senior Manager and is the lead person for maintenance and repair personnel; and evaluates work for quality, efficiency and safety.  Assigns and oversees work by the following positions: Mechanics, Welders, Electronic Technicians, Marine Electricians, and Mechanic Assistant.  Assists in maintaining records and coordinating maintenance activities with other departments.  Diagnoses and makes necessary repairs to any machinery or mechanical equipment on board Authority vessels, rescue craft, work boats, and ashore.  Has thorough knowledge of equipment being repaired with respect to specifications and guidelines required for safe and reliable maintenance.   Responsible for following established safety practices while performing assigned duties to protect self, co-workers and the public from personal injury and to prevent damage to Authority property.




  • Acts as lead in Senior Manager’s absence
  • Participates in and directs engine overhauls
  • Assigns personnel with varying skillsets to corresponding repairs or tasks
  • Keeps records of repairs and overhaul data
  • Periodically meets with other departments to coordinate work schedules
  • Assists in parts identification and ordering
  • Reviews proposals for purchase of equipment and services
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Manager, Port Engineer and/or Senior Port Engineer, Port Captain & Director of Ferry Operations
  • May attend inter-departmental staff meetings in the absence of the Senior Manager/Port Engineer 
  • Responsible for training less senior mechanics on technical skills and procedures
  • Knowledgeable with the following:
    • Assorted hand, electric, and air operated tools o Lathe, milling, boring, and drilling machines
    • Measuring instruments (electronic and hand)
    • Personal computer with word perfect, spread sheet, and management information systems software
    • Two-way radios
    • Motor vehicles
  • Provides highest level of customer service and professionalism to all internal and external customers




  • Must demonstrate leadership ability; may be required to provide leadership at a different site (i.e. during shipyard evolutions) 
  • Subject matter expert in:Marine Diesel engines and related equipment, i.e. reduction gears and clutches  o
  • Oil fired boilers, maintenance, servicing and safety inspections o Pumps, various service – cooling, circulating, hydraulic o Air/pneumatic controls o General mechanical applications 
  • Must have the ability, intellect, knowledge and experience to direct and supervise work of a highly skilled and technical nature
  • Knowledge of U.S.C.G., and A.B.S. regulations
  • Able to use all types of measurement devices for calibration and evaluation of machinery
  • Must have a thorough working knowledge of engine repair, welding, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, machine work, electrical knowledge and be able to use blueprints and information and technical manuals
  • Must be capable of using a computer for record keeping and entering and or recovering data in maintenance programs
  • Ability to provide superior customer service



  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent work experience; Associates Degree preferred
  • Minimum of (7) seven years’ experience with machinery repair, in the marine industry preferred
  • Completion of Fairbanks Morse overhaul school for 38D8-1/8 engine, preferred
  • Completion of EMD diesel engine overhaul school, preferred
  • Completion of Detroit Diesel Series 71 overhaul school, preferred
  • Completion of Caterpillar Series 3400 overhaul school, preferred



  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must apply for and obtain an (MMC) Merchant Marine Credential as Wiper (minimum) within 6 months 




  • Applicants will be subject to a pre-employment physical, background check, and drug test
  • Applicants must be willing and available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of this facility.
  • Applicants must be willing to attend vessel dry-dock periods and other off-site maintenance or repairs as required which may entail extended periods of time away from home.
